As we emerge from the creative confinement of lockdowns, it’s no surprise that fashion designers have wholeheartedly embraced a “Euro Summer” aesthetic for their prints this season.
As we binge watched series like “The White Lotus” we were transported from the comfort of our couch to the captivating landscapes of Sicily, giving birth to prints and designs that evoke the sensation of traveling to far-off destinations.
Shot against the charming streets of Rome, this collection embodies our collective yearning for travel and the allure of the rich and vibrant essence of the Italian Summer lifestyle.
DISCOVERING INSPIRATION
Designer and Founder of Saffron Road, Michelle Delapierre, shares our yearning for adventure. Married to a Frenchman and making annual European trips to visit her stepchildren, she sought to make this year's vacation truly special. Italy, with its rich history and vibrant culture, beckoned her soul.
As she embarked on the exciting task of researching destinations, Michelle soon realised that half the fun of travel lies in the planning process. Yet, it was a seemingly ordinary Sicilian tile, tucked away in the background of a location shot, that unexpectedly sparked her creative journey toward embracing the vibrant colours of Italy.
IGNITING THE CREATIVE FIRE
For Michelle, those colours and prints ignited a fire in her creative soul. She decided to embark on a unique artistic endeavour, collaborating with a talented illustrator. Together, they breathed life into the ancient Majolica patterns of Sicily, bringing them onto fabric. This intricate and labour-intensive process has now become the heart and soul of her latest summer collection.
THE CHALLENGE OF AUTHENTICITY
Creating this collection proved to be a formidable challenge. The intricate, hand-painted nature of the design posed substantial difficulties for traditional screen-printing techniques. Consequently, Michelle and her team ventured into the world of digital printing, a novel process for them. It was the only path that allowed them to authentically capture the essence of the print and evoke its true beauty.
